Job Title: Warehouse Technician
FLSA Classification: Hourly Non-Exempt
Reports to: Branch Manager or Designee of Chief Operations Officer
Schedule: Monday – Friday; 7:30 am – 4:30 pm or 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, and other hours as required by need, such as weather disasters or special events. Lunch is 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm, unless there is a special circumstance on a given day.

Position Summary

SHSG Warehouse Technicians play an important role in supporting daily distribution center operations, including receiving, product movement, processing, disposal, and order picking. As part of the Operations Team, this position helps ensure food safety, cleanliness, and workplace safety in alignment with SHSG guidelines. Starting pay is set at $15.00 per hour, with increases determined by level of experience and demonstrated competency in meeting the expectations of this role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help ensure contents are properly secured inside vehicles to prevent damage during transport
  • Pick, palletize, prepare, and load products with care to support safe and efficient movement of food
  • Communicate any quantity or product quality concerns to warehouse management in a timely manner
  • Build and maintain positive, respectful relationships with food donors and recipients
  • Stock products in an organized manner, supporting proper label identification and allergen compliance
  • Operate assigned vehicles safely and responsibly after receiving appropriate training and direction
  • Support food safety standards, including proper temperature control
  • Assist with weighing products and loading or unloading items at SHSG warehouse locations
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and aligned with AIB procedures, Feeding America guidelines, and applicable industry regulations
  • Work cooperatively with team members, supervisors, coworkers, partner agencies, and other stakeholders
  • Promote workplace safety in all aspects of the role, especially when using warehouse equipment or assigned vehicles
  • Represent the Food Bank in a professional, helpful, and customer-focused manner
  • Safely operate forklifts, hand trucks, manual/electric jacks, pallet wrapping machines, compactors, and other tools or machines as appropriate after SHSG training and certification
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, and training as requested to support the team and role expectations
  • Complete duties related to the assigned Zone Detail as needed.

  • Comfortable using basic computer functions, including sending and receiving emails
  • Able to think ahead, stay organized, and balance facilities and AIB-related responsibilities

  • Manage time effectively and adjust to changing priorities when needed
  • Able to read and follow documents such as safety rules and operating instructions
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively with clients, donors, coworkers, and the public
  • Work well both independently and as part of a team
  • Use basic math skills, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in all units of measure
  • Bring a strong work ethic, professionalism, dependability, and respect for diversity to the role
  • Approach problems thoughtfully and pay close attention to detail
  • Be available for some evening and/or weekend support for pre-planned events, as needed

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred
  • Three or more years of cleaning, sanitation, or warehouse experience is helpful
  • A genuine appreciation for SHSG’s mission and comfort sharing it with others
  • Basic computer skills are helpful for daily communication and recordkeeping
  • Food industry experience is a plus
  • Mechanical and/or electrical experience is a plus
  • Forklift operation experience is preferred; SHSG will provide training and certification as needed

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Must have valid driver’s license (this is not a CDL required position)
  • Successfully complete SERVSAFE® Food Safety certification within first twelve months of onboarding
  • Must be able to pass background checks, MVR checks for employees over twenty-one years of age, drug screens and fit-for duty testing
     

Physical Demands

The SHSG Warehouse Technician’s role is a highly active and fast-paced working position. The primary physical requirements include the ability to routinely lift and carry items weight anywhere from fifty to seventy-five pounds, frequently bend, stoop, and stand for long periods, and work comfortably in extreme warehouse and freezer temperatures.
More specific physical and environmental demands regularly encountered at SHSG include:
  • Reach with hands and arms to the floor and overhead; at times, while moving items
  • Taste or smell
  • Required to walk or stand, six to eight hours at a time; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl on concrete floors throughout the day
  • Lift and move fifty to seventy-five pounds, throughout the day –
    • 70% of daily scheduled time, so this is the majority of the Warehouse Technician’s workload, daily.
    • Team lifting available
    • Lift assist devices and equipment available in most circumstances and scenarios – 95% of lifts
  • Must be physically and mentally capable of safely operating manual and motorized equipment, including pallet jacks, hand trucks, and forklifts.
  • Good vision (including depth perception and identifying colors), ability to read computer screens with or without aid) hearing (with and without aid) and the ability to speak clearly to communicate with coworkers and donors.
     

Work Environment

  • Noise level is low to moderate and ranges between 35-65 DBA, 90% time worked
  • Usually works in a warehouse setting – 90% time on average
  • Works outside in varied weather – 10% time on average
    • Outdoors – ranging from below freezing to above 100  F
  • May operate vehicles such as lifts and scrubbers, within the confines of the warehouse or on designated parking lots
