Project Title: Visitor Services Intern
Position Summary
The Visitor Services Intern will support public engagement, interpretation, and daily visitor center operations at Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site. This position focuses on sharing the legacy of Booker T. Washington and the Tuskegee Institute while enhancing the visitor experience through meaningful storytelling, education, and customer service.
The intern will play a key role in connecting visitors to the historical, cultural, and educational significance of the site by delivering interpretive information, supporting programs, and ensuring a welcoming environment for diverse audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Visitor Engagement & Services
- Welcome and orient visitors to the site, exhibits, and programs
- Provide accurate and engaging information about Tuskegee Institute history
- Respond to visitor questions and assist with navigation of the site
- Support daily visitor center operations, including front desk duties
Interpretation & Education
- Deliver informal and formal interpretive talks to visitors
- Assist with guided tours and educational programming
- Support K 12 school visits and group tours
- Communicate the legacy of George Washington, Booker T. Washington, and Tuskegee Institute
Program & Event Support
- Assist with planning and execution of public programs and special events
- Support logistics such as setup, materials preparation, and visitor coordination
- Contribute ideas to enhance visitor engagement and programming
Documentation & Data Collection
- Track visitor attendance and engagement metrics
- Collect visitor feedback to support program improvement
- Assist with basic reporting and documentation
Collaboration & Professional Development
- Work closely with NPS staff, park rangers, and GYF program managers
- Participate in weekly check-ins and InternXL professional development sessions
- Contribute to team discussions and site initiatives
Learning Goals

Qualifications
- Background or interest in history, public history, African American studies, education, or related field
- Strong communication and public speaking skills
- Interest in community engagement and visitor experience
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment
- Professionalism and customer service mindset
- Experience with public-facing roles (preferred but not required)
