Position Information

Job Title Visiting Professor of Analytical Chemistry Position Summary

Designs and delivers instruction in undergraduate Chemistry and non-majors courses offered by the School. Participates in all department functions and various school, and University-wide committees and activities as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares lessons and delivers instruction for day, evening, and weekend courses for undergraduates. Teaches (five sections per semester: two lectures and three laboratory courses or three lectures and two laboratory courses) that includes Analytical Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, General Chemistry I and II, Forensic Science, and a general education physical science course. | Daily 60%
  • Adheres to the established class schedule and office hours on a daily basis. Submits book requests, syllabi, grades, assessments, and other required paperwork and reports in a timely manner. | Daily 20%
  • Remains knowledgeable of current research activities in the discipline by participating in conferences, publishing, and maintaining collaborative research relations. | Monthly 5%
  • Participates in curriculum and program development and coordinates curriculum revision with other academic programs. | Monthly 5%
  • Advises undergraduate students for successful BS degree completion and pursuit of post baccalaureate training opportunities. | Monthly 5%
  • Participates in departmental, school, and university meetings and academic activities. | Monthly 5%
  • Maintain departmental instrumentation to include GC, GC/MS, LC/MS, HPLC, IR, UV/VIS | As needed
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean and Department Chair. | As needed

Education, Certifications and/or Licenses

  • Doctorate in Chemistry with an emphasis in Analytical Chemistry.
  • Demonstrated potential for strong teaching and quality research required.

Experience

  • Experience administering and teaching required courses for Chemistry/Biochemistry degrees.
  • Experience in college-level teaching using active learning techniques and best practices classroom content delivery
  • Has experience in assessment of learning outcomes
  • Experience in Forensic Sciences
  • Willingness to deliver required content.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge(position requirements at entry): Knowledge of:

  • Thorough understanding of Chemistry/Biochemistry and its application in various disciplines.
  • Familiarity with currently used technologies in the physical sciences.
  • Familiarity with effective use of online course management systems.
  • Familiarity with academic policies and procedures of higher education institutions.
  • Ability to adhere to University and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to be discreet in handling condential matters, while complying with FERPA regulations.
  • Ability to comply with rules, standards, regulations and laws related to student records.
  • Evidence of excellence in and commitment to teaching general education Chemistry and physical science courses.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to demonstrate and provide excellent service to both the University and the community.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret academic periodicals, professional journals, and/or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write research papers.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students and peers.

CHEMISTRY SKILLS

  • Ability to develop and use standard instruments used in Analytical Chemistry and other (pH meters, burets, volumetric glassware, etc.) resources as needed in teaching laboratory courses.
  • Ability to maintain major departmental instrumentation (NMR, GC, GC/MS, HPLC, IR, UV/VIS).
