POSITION OVERVIEW

The Department of Biology at Southwestern University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor of Biology position for the 2026-2027 academic year. We seek an enthusiastic educator committed to dynamic teaching and the use of active-learning approaches in the classroom and laboratory.

The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester. In Fall 2026, the faculty member will contribute one course each to our first-year foundational lecture and laboratory sequence in the areas of Ecology and Evolution and teach an upper level lecture in Conservation Biology (BIO50-384). In Spring 2027, the faculty member will teach an upper-level lecture course in Evolutionary Biology (BIO50-334) and then an additional upper-level Ecology course with a laboratory (BIO50-434) where we expect students to gain some field experience that can vary depending on the expertise of the faculty (i.e., terrestrial or aquatic).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of a Master's degree in Biology or closely related field with at least 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline (Ph.D. preferred).
  • Evidence of ability and desire to engage students through active learning, inclusive teaching practices, and experiential laboratory instruction.
  • Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate level is preferred.

The annual salary for this 9-month position is $50,000 for individuals with the terminal degree in-hand by August 1 (Assistant Professor) or $47,000 for individuals with the Master's degree in-hand by August 1 (Instructor). The position includes health insurance for the duration of the appointment period.
