Job Description:

Virtual Desktop Support Engineer

Location: Jacksonville, Florida (On-site)

Duration: 7 months

Role Overview

This position is for a Senior Virtual Desktop Support Engineer responsible for the design, support, administration, and optimization of Omnissa Horizon (formerly VMware Horizon) Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments. The role focuses on ensuring high availability, performance, security, and a positive end-user experience for enterprise virtual desktops and applications. This is an on-site role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide L2/L3 support for Omnissa Horizon VDI environments, troubleshooting complex issues involving virtual desktops, user profiles, and session performance.
  • Perform root cause analysis and problem management to resolve underlying issues.
  • Administer and support Omnissa Horizon components, VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter.
  • Maintain VDI images, golden templates, and application layers while monitoring system health, capacity, and performance.
  • Optimize desktop performance, capacity, and scalability through patches, upgrades, and lifecycle management.
  • Develop scripts, preferably in PowerShell, to automate provisioning, image updates, and system health checks.
  • Utilize monitoring tools such as ControlUp or Stratusphere to ensure service reliability and improve user experience.
  • Ensure adherence to security standards, manage access policies, and maintain patching and vulnerability remediation processes.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, security, and network teams, as well as application owners and business stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.

Required Qualifications

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience supporting VDI or virtualized environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Omnissa (VMware) Horizon and VMware vSphere / ESXi / vCenter.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong expertise in the virtual desktop lifecycle, including image management and provisioning.
  • Proficiency with profile management tools such as FSLogix or an equivalent.
  • Deep understanding of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy (GPOs) in VDI environments, and Windows desktop/server operating systems.
  • PowerShell scripting abilities for automation and administration.
  • Experience supporting thin clients (e.g., Wyse, IGEL) and remote access solutions.
  • Familiarity with VDI monitoring and analytics tools, with the ability to troubleshoot across network, storage, and compute layers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Omnissa App Volumes and Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM).
  • Familiarity with cloud VDI platforms like Azure Virtual Desktop or Horizon Cloud.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts including load balancing, SSL, VPN, and UAG.
  • Experience with security tools such as CrowdStrike or Defender.
  • VMware/Omnissa or Microsoft certifications are considered a plus.
  • Experience working in regulated environments like finance, healthcare, or government.
