Job Description

The Chesapeake Sheriff's Office is hiring a Director for the Victim/Witness Assistance Program. The Director provides leadership, oversight and strategic direction for all program services provided. This role ensures delivery of high-quality, trauma-informed services to individuals impacted by crime while maintaining compliance with federal and state grant requirements. The Director supervises staff, manages program operations, and leads grant reporting and program evaluation efforts to support organizational growth and sustainability. This role will provide support services to survivors of violent crime and their loved ones.

Key responsibilities: Ensure all program services align with best practices in victim advocacy.

Supervise, train and support program staff

Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and professional development.

Submit grant applications, renewals, reporting and audits.

Prepare victim and witnesses for participation in court proceedings through explanation of the steps in the process..

Escorts victims to court and remain with them during proceedings.

Produce and provide written material to victims and witnesses to inform them of resources such as compensation, protective orders, victim impact statements and release notifications.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires a bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience in law, sociology, psychology, or a closely related field. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in social work, public administration, criminal justice, or a related field.

3-5 years of experience in victim services, social services, or nonprofit program management.

Knowledge of trauma-informed care and victim advocacy best practices.

Experience supervising staff and managing programs.

Experience with federal and state grant programs
