Department INFUSION THERAPY - 206260 Worker Sub Type Regular Work Shift Pay Grade Job Description The Vascular Access Specialist is responsible for orienting and coaching new and existing staff in evidence based vascular access for patients across the continuum of care; development and ongoing evaluation of clinical and/or non-clinical competencies in vascular access; use of evidence based practice; participation and leadership in continuous quality improvement monitoring, research and goal setting in vascular access; collaborative Initiatives for prevention of vascular access complications (CLABSI, extravasation etc.). Duties include, but are not limited to: Clinical/Leadership: Consults with staff and role models appropriate resource utilization and critical thinking skills. Demonstrated ability to provide age specific care and treatment appropriate to specific area within Nursing Resources. Exercise independent clinical judgments, which are consistent with professional standards, legal constraints, nursing research and science. Participates in committees and special projects at the direction of leadership. Education/Leadership: A vascular access orientation program that is designed, monitored and evaluated according to job classification and documented in unit-based employee files. Collaboration with leadership and VAT to develop plans to identify and address general hospital wide and individual staff learning needs as well as patient and family learning needs. Coordination with clinical educators and unit preceptors for competencies and assistance to identify and meet specific and diverse needs of new employees during their orientation. Employee advancement through unit-based vascular access skill levels through the promotion of professional development, continuing education and program development for general and advanced skills. Participation with the leadership in the formal evaluation of self and others, including preceptor development and staff clinical skill acquisition and maintenance. Serves as a vascular access liaison with nursing, as well as non-nursing, students, instructors, home health, and skilled nursing facilities. Process Improvement/Leadership: Action as facilitator or team leader for: staff education, patient education and performance improvement committees. Assists leadership with coordination, facilitation and revision of policy, procedure and standards of care. Assists leadership with evaluation of outcome data, trends and quality management data to determine patient and staff needs and implementation of processes to facilitate improvement. Communication of staff of new and revised policies and procedures, maintenance of current documents and evaluation of staff compliance. Education of staff on new and revised policies and procedures, maintenance of current documents and evaluation of staff compliance. Education Bachelors Nursing (BSN) is required or an agreement to begin BSN within (1) year and complete BSN or equivalence in MSN work within 5 years of hire is required Experience (5) years of RN experience preferred ICU or ED experience preferred Certification & Licensures Licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as Registered Nurse required BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart 'Healthcare Provider' (HCP) - AHA approved required. New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation. Certification in Vascular Access through either the Infusion Nurses Society (INS) or the Association of Vascular Access (AVA) is required within 2-3 years of hire Advanced Care Life Support preferred Qualifications Excellent intravenous insertion skills. Skill in use of ultrasound guided peripheral IV insertion. Skill in midline placement and maintenance of a sterile field. Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based practice in relation to vascular access. Skill in planning, organizing and managing complex functions and processes. Demonstrates history of clinical expertise. Utilizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills through interventions with staff to provide quality patient outcomes. Knowledgeable in the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological stages of human growth and development. Knowledgeable in adult learning principles used to teach staff, families and patients vascular access care. Skill and knowledge of basic excel spreadsheets to maintain data collection and create graphs for educational and performance improvement purposes.
