Working/Functional Title

Urgent Care/Versa Veterinary Nurse

Position Summary

This position will be working with a Veterinarian to provide patient care for outpatient urgent/emergency cases seen at MSU’s Veterinary Medical Center. Provides patient care for ill and injured animals in the Veterinary Medical Center. This position will be primarily providing support to our Small Animal Urgent Care Service; Instructing and demonstrating techniques to students; assists students, veterinary technicians, and veterinarians in their work; maintains supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of hospital areas. Skills you will develop and utilize include urgent care triage, client communication, IV catheter placement, nursing care, knowledge of setup and assisting with urgent care procedures. 

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization; experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment

 

Desired Qualifications

Six months to one year as a veterinary technician in an educational setting, experience in a teaching hospital.

Prior experience with anesthesia and sedation events and monitoring

Summary of Physical Demands

 Lifting and carrying animals up to 50 pounds individually, or 150 pounds as a team.

Summary of Health Risks

Potential exposure to animals or specimens with Mycobacterium
Work with animals or unfixed tissue
Wear a respirator (does not include paper dust mask worn for comfort)
