Position Summary

Supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for construction inspection of City contractor work; ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures and perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for conducting construction inspection activities.
  • Establish schedules and methods for providing construction inspection services; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures; monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures.
  • Perform technical and complex tasks of the work unit; compare plans with work in progress and identify deficiencies.
  • Inspect capital improvement projects in progress of construction to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, codes, contracts and safe construction practices.
  • Maintain daily reports on all projects to verify the use of methods, materials, construction progress, delays, accidents, property damage, instructions, equipment and personnel.
  • Coordinate scheduling with contractors and utility representatives to identify hazards, nuisances, or damages to private or public property.
  • Coordinate field and laboratory construction material testing; review test results for abnormalities or concerns; make recommendations and take corrective action as necessary.
  • Identify possible ordinance violations, or corrections and ensure that approved projects are constructed according to City standards.
  • Participate in the selection of construction inspection staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
  • Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of public works construction inspection.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in construction management, or construction engineering; and

Five (5) years experience in construction inspection or construction management; and

To include two (2) years of supervisory experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexicos Drivers License or ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operators Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

Environmental:

Field and construction site environment; travel from site to site; work around heavy construction equipment.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking and standing for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
