Upper School Nurse

CLASSIFICATION

Non-Exempt/Hourly - 10 Month Position

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Upper School Nurse promotes the health and safety of students and staff by providing professional nursing services in accordance with state and district policies. The nurse supports student learning by addressing health barriers, managing chronic conditions, and responding to acute medical needs during the school day.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Student Care

  • Assess and manage student illness, injuries, and health concerns
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments according to physician orders
  • Provide emergency care and coordinate responses for serious injuries or medical conditions
  • Maintain infection control standards and manage communicable disease reporting

Health Management & Case Coordination

  • Develop and implement individualized health care plans (IHPs) for students with chronic or complex medical needs
  • Monitor immunization compliance and notify families of any deficiencies
  • Support students with medical accommodations, including 504 plans and IEPs, in collaboration with staff and families
  • Participate in Student Support Team (SST) meetings as needed

Recordkeeping & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records in compliance with state and FERPA regulations
  • Document clinic visits, medication administration, and parent communication
  • Prepare required health reports for local and state authorities

Health Education & Promotion

  • Provide health-related education and resources to students, families, and staff
  • Promote wellness initiatives, hygiene practices, and preventative care
  • Serve as a resource on public health issues and guidance

Collaboration & Communication

  • Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and medical providers
  • Participate in school safety planning, including emergency preparedness and crisis response
  • Train staff on basic health procedures, including EpiPen use and seizure protocols

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in Wisconsin
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience (pediatric or school setting preferred)

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • School Nurse Certification (or ability to obtain within 1 year)
  • Knowledge of child development, chronic disease management, and public health protocols
