Job Description Summary

As a research analyst, a prospective medical student will be exposed to the clinical operative and academic side of medicine. While experiencing the field of orthopaedic surgery hands-on, the analyst will assist our orthopaedic spine physicians in continuing their extensive research and conducting studies for the field as a whole, while also providing care to their patients, whether in the clinic or the operating room.

The applicant should have a strong academic record, be creative, self-driven, reliable, and motivated to learn. An ideal candidate will have been previously involved in clinical or basic research and demonstrated interest in academic medicine. The position offers the opportunity for education and hands-on learning in the medical field. Proficiency in Excel is required. Some experience with data management is preferred, although not required.

Guideline and Supervision

Research assistants will work closely with Dr. Reitman, Dr. Lawrence, Dr. Ravinsky, Dr. Banagan, and our MUSC Orthopaedic Surgery Residents and medical students.

Job Duties

• Recruiting patients and collecting data for research studies. • Completing data analysis and manuscript preparation for scientific publication. • Supporting physicians with ongoing studies, projects, videos, papers, and presentations. • Drafting grant proposals for internal and extramural funding announcements. • Gathering patient images, X-rays, as well as operative and clinical notes and videos. • Assembling surgeons presentations and case reports. • Drafting Institutional Review Board documentation for research studies.

Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and two years of clerical or paraprofessional experience involving the compilation of data and statistics. A bachelors degree may be substituted for the required work experience.
