Job Summary and Qualifications The Unit Secretary assumes primary responsibility of unit secretarial, receptionist and clerical support in a professional manner in accordance with Methodist Excellence standards. He/she is expected to apply skills in critical thinking, appropriate judgment, mental organizational and unit operation skills to perform a variety of tasks. Demonstrates knowledge of office equipment operation, interdepartmental function and effective communication and policy.Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics:Education: NoneExperience: NoneEmployee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served (if applicable).Preferred: 1 year secretarial experience in a healthcare setting Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required: NoneEssential Job Functions:Demonstrates knowledge in all aspects of medical terminology and accurately transcribes physician's orders.Complete assignments independently and demonstrates teamwork when needed using effective problem-solving skills, chain of command and effective communication with coworkers, supervisors, physicians, and the public in a professional and pleasant manner consistent with Methodist Excellence standards.Accurately schedules, requests or communicates necessary patient information with regard to hospital privacy policies.Demonstrates knowledge and operation/application of unit equipment and software applications and programs.Actively works as part of a team of physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals to support hospital policy and promote patient safety. Assists nursing staff as requested with delegated tasks to support the patient experience.Greets and assists visitors, answers their inquiries, and directs them to the appropriate persons according to their needs. Answers a multi-line telephone system and responds to requests efficiently in a friendly, courteous and professional manner. Additional Job Functions:May handle, pick up, deliver and/or stock non-controlled medications as directed by a licensed team member.Supports the mission and vision of the Methodist Healthcare System. Understands and is committed to helping the Methodist Healthcare System and its associated facilities achieve its goals.Must learn and comply with System and facility safety policies and rules; must use appropriate safety equipment and procedures at all times; must immediately report all unsafe conditions to supervisors; must be familiar with all safety features of equipment, tools or materials encompassed by job duties; and must check with supervisors (prior to job performance) if there is a question as to the safe procedure to be used for any job function.Adheres to the MHS Code of Conduct and demonstrates ethical behavior as expected by our patients, colleagues and community.
