Job Summary
The Underground Fiber Optic Laborer supports the installation and maintenance of underground fiber optic infrastructure. This role involves hands-on physically demanding work assisting with trenching conduit installation and cable placement. Candidates must be dependable, safety-focused, and able to work effectively as part of a crew in outdoor environments.
Essential Tasks
• Perform physical labor related to underground fiber optic construction, including trenching, backfilling, laying conduit, and pulling fiber optic cable. • Assist with job site setup and cleanup, including locating and verifying existing utilities using maps, markings, and flagging. • Operate and assist with construction tools and equipment as directed. • Use hand and power tools safely and efficiently. • Follow all OSHA and company safety policies, including participation in daily safety meetings and proper use of required PPE. • Assist with basic maintenance and care of tools and equipment. • Work closely with crew members and communicate effectively with supervisors. • Maintain a professional and respectful attitude when interacting with coworkers, property owners, and the public.
Qualifications
Previous experience in underground utility construction, fiber optic installation, or general construction is preferred but not required. Willingness to learn and follow directions in a fast-paced work environment is essential. Basic knowledge of construction practices and tools is also required. Knowledge of fiber optic color codes is a plus but not required.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Prior construction, fiber optic, or underground utility experience is helpful but not mandatory.
Working Conditions
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and other environmental elements. The position requires physically demanding labor, including lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling materials weighing 50 pounds or more. Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and working in trenches for extended periods are also required. Exposure to construction equipment noise, dust, uneven terrain, and active job sites is also present. Strong emphasis on job site safety and adherence to company and OSHA safety standards is necessary. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
Work Hours
The normal work hours for this position are Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, with extended hours and required overtime when needed may also include overnight and weekend work depending on project schedules.
