Job Description
Under limited supervision, administers, plans, and directs a full range of support to all University Interscholastic League (UIL) academic activities. Initiates projects that improve curriculum instruction, student achievement, and community involvement. Develops training and guidance to prepare campuses for annual participation at all University Interscholastic League academic contests. Provides professional growth and development initiatives for teachers sponsoring UIL activities. Oversees and coordinates preparatory contests and tournaments as assigned.
UIL Specialist 1 - Responsibilities
Responsibilities
- Develops and carries out districtwide co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for students and teachers such as exhibits, contests, and performances in order to prepare campuses for official UIL activities.
- Formulates, creates, and administers content area in-services, assessment planning, and direction for sponsors of UIL activities by leading the execution of staff development, special events, and activities impacting all HISD schools.
- Analyzes programs in response to principals, district staffs, and central administrators requests and concerns. Manages the implementation of programs that promote the improvement of student achievement with a variety of new and ongoing community organizations'' projects.
- Researches ways and means for organizations and schools to initiate involvement in UIL activities through the development of district-wide pilot projects, grant-writing, exhibitions, contests, and performances.
- Serves as a UIL liaison to the community. Participates in organizations associated with UIL. Other duties as assigned.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
- No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice and training to staff.
WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT
- Work is substantially complex, varied and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the department. Supervision received typically consists of providing direction on the more complex projects and new job duties and priorities.

- Analyzes and interprets data and figures.

- Decisions are made on both routine and non-routine matters with some latitude, but are still subject to approval. Job is occasionally expected to recommend new solutions to problems and improve existing methods or generate new ideas.

Errors are usually discovered in succeeding operations where most of the work is verified or checked and is normally confined to a single department or phase of the organizational activities resulting in brief inconvenience.
