Job Title: Truancy Intervention Counselor (CCEIS)

Reports to: Director of Counseling

Primary Purpose:

Serve as district early prevention and intervention counselor, especially in the area of school attendance. Provide assistance to campus personnel in resolving truancy, excessive absences, and tardiness problems. Serve as a district liaison to parents, law enforcement agencies, and court personnel.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree required in counseling or related field
  • School Counselor Certification, LPC, LCSW or similar required

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Implement truancy prevention measures in accordance with state regulations including imposing individual student behavior improvement plans, school-based community service, referral to community based services, including counseling or other services aimed at addressing a student's truancy.
  • Meet at least annually with court designated case managers to discuss effective truancy prevention measures.
  • Confer regularly with teachers, counselors, principals, and other staff as well as parents to identify student tardiness, absences, truancy, and school-avoidance. Counsel students at risk of dropping out and make a reasonable effort to gain their cooperation to improve attendance.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents. This includes communicating compulsory attendance laws and school policy to parents and students.
  • Conduct home visits and parent conferences on student truancy and attendance problems.
  • Develop and implement appropriate awareness, prevention, and intervention programs.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required, including records of all cases investigated and reports required by the commissioner of education and CCEIS grant.
  • Implement and comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the area of student attendance. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, parents and community members.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Pursue professional development activities that align with district goals and initiatives and current professional research.
  • Promote and follow ethical standards for school and professional counselors.
  • Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district wide travel. Exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
