Working Hours

If so, we are looking for a Tree Trimmer that will help shape the safety, beauty, and livability of our city. Every day brings opportunities to trim, plant, and remove trees, operate both light and heavy equipment, and ensure safe conditions for pedestrians and crew members alike.

You'll play a key part in responding to emergency after-hours calls, stepping up as a crew leader during critical events, and supporting the city during special projects and national disaster responses.

You'll also help keep our equipment operating at its best and collaborate with other departments to keep our parks, roadways, and public spaces looking their finest.

Typical Tasks

JOB DUTIES:

  • Maintaining trees by removing dead and hazardous limbs; pruning and raising limbs over walk ways
  • Removing trees and plants deemed hazardous
  • Utilizing machinery, hand tools, vehicles and ropes during tree and plant maintenance and removal
  • Assisting other departments during special events and projects
  • Maintaining equipment by assisting performs preventative maintenance

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Level of knowledge is equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.

  • Minimum of one year of relevant experience, to include the operation of the tools required

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid drivers license is required in order to apply.

  • Candidates must currently have, or have the ability to obtain a class A CDL within one year.

  • Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines.

  • Employees are required to participate in our after hours on call program. This involves being available to respond to emergency calls at any time during their scheduled on call time. On call shifts rotate among employees in 1 week increments.

  • Employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to work outside of their regularly scheduled shifts at any time.

  • This includes before, during and after weather related events.

Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Pushing, pulling and lifting tree branches, limbs and debris 50-75 lbs. infrequently (once or twice a week)

  • Lifting, holding and carrying limbs, debris and equipment 35-50 lbs. frequently (daily)

  • Lifting, holding and carrying limbs, debris and equipment 25-35 lbs. constantly (multiple times a day)

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position generally requires work outdoors and in a vehicle.

Health Benefits are offered to employees working at least 30 hours per week.

Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following hire for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.

Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following hire. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.

Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.

Retirement:

  • NC Local Government Retirement System - All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.
  • Deferred Compensation - The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to a 401(k) plan regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the 401(k) or 457 deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.

Paid Leave (offered to employees working at least 1,000 hours annually*):

  • Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year
  • Annual Leave - Accrual based on years of service and classification. Employees can earn from 10 to 24 days each year.
  • Holidays - 13 paid holidays annually
  • Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA).
  • Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.
