Job Title: Sonographer Profession: Sonographer Specialty: Imaging Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 8 Experience: Minimum 1 year clinical experience preferred License: Required minimum licenses and certifications upon hire Certifications: ARDMS - Registered Medical Sonographer or ARRT-S - ARRT Sonography, BLS - Basic Life Support or equivalent Must-Have: Experience in Client and familiarity with Epic and Samsung units Description: Must be flexible with work hours to meet departmental needs. Must be dependable, accountable, and cooperative. Assists with providing safe, age-appropriate care to patients by performing all exams according to departmental protocols. Has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study. Responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the use of equipment for diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Able to independently perform job functions. Sets up the equipment to provide imaging services and positions patients for procedures. Core Responsibilities: Verifies proper clinician order for procedures. Obtains complete clinical history, gathers examination data, and assesses for contraindicating conditions. Ensures all studies have proper patient identification and that right and left markers are utilized appropriately. Reviews ultrasound images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients. Responds to emergency situations and maintains life support equipment. Assists other technologists in all modalities when needed. Observes patient condition and evaluates situations when physician intervention is necessary to prevent deterioration. Verifies correct identity of patients using two unique identifiers prior to procedures. Ensures patient privacy and comfort are accommodated. Maintains patient dignity throughout the exam or procedure. Demonstrates competence in determining and applying appropriate procedures, equipment, supplies, and techniques based on patient age. Organizes schedule, time, and priorities to accomplish required activities within designated time frames. Follows physician instructions when assisting with procedures and exams. Uses critical thinking skills and engages in dialogue with patients and families. Seeks clarification on ambiguous orders and understands, demonstrates, and documents pre-procedural verification and Time Out processes. Demonstrates and understands pre-and post-procedural care. Preps the patient for the procedure and demonstrates understanding of sterile technique. Education and Communication: Patiently and clearly explains the purpose and nature of exams to patients prior to procedures to minimize anxiety and facilitate cooperation. Addresses patient questions, concerns, or contraindications satisfactorily, notifying physicians when this cannot be accomplished prior to procedures. Participates in orientation and training of departmental employees. Provides patients with preparatory instruction and explanations of procedures. Ensures required documentation is concise, legible, and uses precise terminology. Reads email daily on scheduled workdays and follows through with assignments. Completes mandatory departmental and hospital-wide education without prompting. Quality Control: Consistently produces acceptable images as evidenced by provider feedback and quality audits. Ensures equipment is fully operational prior to each use by checking for proper calibration and operating deficiencies. Sends all studies to PACS immediately after completion and prints CDs as needed. Completes all studies in RIS before finalizing in PACS. Maintains quality control logs for probe disinfection and follows infection control policies. Operations: Restocks linens and supplies, maintains the department in a clean and orderly condition. Transports and positions patients, assists them on and off procedure tables. Performs patient billing activities on the day services are rendered. Applies supportive and immobilization devices and equipment as needed. Lends knowledge and assistance to others as needed and routinely, ensuring all working time is utilized for departmental advantage. Performs clerical and support personnel duties when warranted to ensure continuity and quality of services. Keeps supervisors informed of responsibilities, ensuring prompt notification of problems or potential issues. Maintains individual productivity rates equal to co-workers. Can operate all workstations associated with the department. Maintains Joint Commission standards and other regulatory agency standards. Takes call when necessary and performs other duties as assigned. Equipment: Demonstrates ability to adjust techniques to minimize ionizing radiation dose while maintaining image quality. Reports problems regarding malfunctioning equipment to supervisors or service providers for timely corrections. Cleans, disinfects, and maintains equipment according to infection control policy and department cleaning schedules. Performs other duties as assigned.
