This is specific to maternal fetal medicine as requested by a physician or licensed provider. The ultrasound technologist operates under the general supervision of a specialist physician. They provide care to patients while obtaining diagnostic quality images for interpretation. The technologist must effectively explain procedures to patients to ensure they are comfortable during the exam. Key responsibilities include performing high-quality ultrasound procedures according to established protocols in a timely manner. They maintain production and quality of imaging procedures while following established standards. Utilizing effective communication techniques, the technologist ensures the correct exam is performed on the right patient. They instruct and communicate with patients and their families regarding the test procedure. The technologist prepares patients and the area for procedures by positioning patients and adjusting equipment controls. They adhere to safety requirements, infection-control, drug and radiation policies, and techniques. The ultrasound technologist uses proper sterile techniques when performing procedures and maintains hygiene standards. They maintain equipment and work areas to meet quality and cleanliness standards. This role requires working with engineers to ensure optimal operational capabilities of equipment and reporting any issues. The technologist obtains, verifies, and maintains all relevant documentation such as patient history and consent forms. They maintain medical imaging records according to department policies and standards. Success in this role depends on the ability to perform procedures independently and manage tasks efficiently. The technologist must maintain a calm and helpful attitude even under stress and effectively administer first aid. Customer satisfaction is also a crucial factor, including limiting wait times and providing courteous service. Continuing education and maintaining current knowledge and skills for various age groups are required. The ultrasound technologist may also serve as a preceptor by providing training to new team members. Taking call may be required as part of the role.
