Job Summary
The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for providing general support within the Specimen Processing Department in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment. This role involves specimen handling, data entry, centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging, and distribution of specimens to laboratory departments while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently under strict turnaround times. This position requires flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to work in a biohazard environment while following all safety and compliance procedures.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform specimen processing functions including presorting, centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging/microfilming, and specimen distribution
  • Accurately enter patient and specimen information into laboratory systems
  • Maintain productivity standards with the ability to perform approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
  • Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, and handling procedures
  • Understand and follow laboratory compliance regulations and test-ordering requirements
  • Maintain quality standards and turnaround times in a production-based environment
  • Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, couriers, and other departments
  • Adhere to HIPAA, OSHA, safety, and laboratory compliance policies
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and safe
  • Demonstrate flexibility to changing workloads and departmental needs
  • Support additional departmental duties as assigned
 
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Basic computer and data entry skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable working with biological specimens and in biohazard environments
  • Flexible schedule availability including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call shifts
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Healthcare or hospital laboratory background
  • Experience in data entry or production-based environments
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS)
