Job Title: Surgical Technologist Profession: Surgical Technologist Specialty: Not specified Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 7 PM - 7:30 AM Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years required License: Not specified Certifications: Current BLS certification required; CST preferred Must-Have: - Physical ability to lift and move patients. - Physical ability to push, pull, and/or lift case carts, instrument trays, and equipment. - Ability to work in a patient care area environment which may include exposure to communicable diseases, unpleasant odors, acute patient conditions, and potential exposure to hazardous gases. - Prolonged standing and walking. Description: Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgical Team members, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during general surgical procedures. The technologist ensures an understanding of the assigned surgical procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgical team. Responsibilities include providing service support related to patient preparation, patient transport, and assisting the surgical care team with specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs. The technologist responds to emergent situations according to established procedures. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Scrubs on general surgical procedures. Prepares the operating room by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies according to the type of surgery. Ensures proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and reports needed repairs. Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Displays cost-consciousness in the opening of sterile supplies and in the care and handling of surgical instruments. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures and notifies the appropriate personnel. Makes necessary supply deliveries to the unit and ancillary departments. Maintains a safe and clean room environment by keeping the room free from clutter, cleaning and stocking rooms, and returning equipment and supplies to designated storage locations. Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient care and privacy. Maintains confidentiality of patient and department care information. Participates in discussions regarding job enrichment and career progression. Completes required education in a timely manner and participates in ongoing department-specific educational programs. Actively participates in audit monitors and department task forces. Supports administrative and departmental governance changes to job role and operations. May train or precept new employees in the Surgical Technologist role. Assists in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients from the operating room. Assists leadership in adjusting par levels for efficient supply management. Recognizes and participates in continuing education. Performs other duties as assigned.
