He/she assists the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care. This role requires knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases. The Surgical Technologist anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare team. They exhibit an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases. Demonstrating an efficient and organized surgical plan is essential for assigned cases. The Surgical Technologist discusses surgical plans with other members of the healthcare team. They troubleshoot instruments and equipment as necessary. The role requires anticipating any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Ability to mentor, precept, or train in various modalities is a key requirement. Participation in performance improvement initiatives is expected. Duties include preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment. The Surgical Technologist must maintain the sterile field and other patient safety concerns vigilantly. Additional duties include gathering required instruments and supplies and serving as a surgical assistant as needed. Other responsibilities may include assisting with inventory, ordering, and stocking relevant areas as assigned. The Surgical Technologist ensures compliance with applicable standards at all times. Call or late coverage may be required. Core responsibilities also include checking supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure. They assist with room set-up which involves opening sterile supplies. Setting up the sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications accurately and in a timely manner is essential. Performing surgical counts with the circulator and actively participating in the procedure pause/time-out are crucial. The Surgical Technologist scrubs, gowns, and gloves. They gown and glove the surgeon and assistants accurately. Assistance in draping the sterile field is required. Passing instruments to the surgeon during the procedure must be done while maintaining an organized back table and operative field. The highest standard of sterile technique must be maintained throughout the procedure. The Surgical Technologist prepares sterile dressings and participates in post-procedure pauses. They account for proper handling of specimens appropriately. Cleaning and preparing instruments for terminal sterilization, as well as communicating critical needs to SPD, is required. Applying principles of asepsis is necessary to ensure infection prevention and safety of patients and employees. Preparation of case carts according to procedures and preference cards is essential. Reviewing the surgical schedule and assisting clinical coordinators with preparation for future cases is required. Observing patient conditions and reporting changes to the physician and registered nurse is crucial. Proactively planning for the next steps in procedures while demonstrating the ability to adjust during emergencies is important. The Surgical Technologist prepares the operating room and other areas as needed for receiving patients. This includes stocking, cleaning equipment, and preparing instruments for future procedures. Maintaining financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment is key. The role also involves providing patient-centered care that is consistent with population-specific characteristics. Verifying procedure and conducting bedside shift reports fosters a partnership with patients. Practicing within current clinical standards under the supervision of the registered nurse is necessary. Upholding all policies, procedures, and clinical competencies is a requirement. The Surgical Technologist supports evidence-based practice and ethical accountability.
