Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Surgical PCU/Stepdown position requiring ventilator care experience and an active VA or compact RN license.

Details

  • Work in the Surgical PCU/Stepdown unit of a large acute care hospital
  • Unit functions as a stepdown from the General Surgical ICU, with a bariatric specialty and backup coverage for the trauma unit
  • Patient ratios typically 1:5 with a staffing goal of 1:4
  • Two beds designated for chronic trach patients (non-ICU level)
  • Uses ortho equipment, chest tubes, surgical drains, trach care, endo tools, PICC lines, and MML
  • Manages IV drips including Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, and Ketamine
  • Provides respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, and BiPAP
  • Utilizes remote telemetry monitoring with tele sitting to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
  • EPIC charting experience required
  • Night shift schedule of 4x12 hours, 6:45pm-7:15am
  • Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts per 6-week block
  • Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Floating required within skillset across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units

Requirements

  • Active RN license (Virginia State or Compact) required, or pending license accepted only for candidates from a non-compact single-state license
  • Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience, preferably at a 250+ bed hospital or larger facility
  • Strong post-op patient care experience required
  • Ventilator care experience for chronic trach patients required
  • EPIC charting experience required
  • Experience with cardiac monitoring, emergency response, and dysrhythmia interpretation/management required
  • Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care required
  • Experience managing cardiac drips (no titration) required
  • Experience with rapid response and code team activation required
  • Experience with isolation precautions and telemetry settings required

Additional Information

  • Provide stepdown-level nursing care to post-surgical and bariatric patients, including ventilator management for chronic trach cases
  • Facility is a Level I Trauma Center, Magnet-designated, and a teaching hospital affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
  • Facility may call off up to 1 shift per 2-week period
  • First-time travelers will be considered if candidates have strong post-op experience at a similar facility, though at least one prior travel assignment is preferred
  • Local candidates are accepted according to facility radius rules
  • Previous employees (per diem or permanent) must have a minimum one-year break before returning as a traveler
