Key Responsibilities
  • Initiate, monitor, and maintain mechanical ventilation for critically ill, pediatric, and neonatal patients; perform emergency intubation, arterial punctures, and ventilator adjustments to maintain arterial blood gases within normal limits
  • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation as part of the resuscitation team, including airway management, manual ventilation, and initiation of mechanical ventilation when indicated
  • Assess and evaluate patients with respiratory disorders, recommend treatment methods and modalities to physicians, and administer age-specific respiratory treatments including aerosol therapy and chest physiotherapy
  • Operate pulmonary function testing equipment and pulse oximetry monitors; perform sleep studies (polysomnography) and electroencephalogram electrode placement as required
  • Provide patient and family education on respiratory treatments, disease processes, breathing exercises, peak flow monitoring, and oxygen conservation techniques
  • Adhere to safety and infection control policies, maintain a clean and well-stocked patient care environment, and maintain strict confidentiality of all facility-related information
Required Qualifications
  • Active Hawaii Respiratory Therapist license (required prior to placement)
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential recognized by the National Board of Respiratory Care, or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential recognized by the National Board of Respiratory Care
  • Experience working with critically ill, pediatric, and neonatal patient populations
  • Proficiency with mechanical ventilators, pulmonary function testing equipment, and pulse oximetry monitoring
  • Knowledge of respiratory medications including proper dosages, actions, precautions, and expected side effects
Preferred Experience / Skills
  • Experience with cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs including patient education on disease management and ABG interpretation
  • Experience performing polysomnography in a sleep study setting
  • Familiarity with electroencephalogram electrode placement and data acquisition procedures
