In an LTAC environment, you will assist with diagnosing and treating lung or breathing disorders, evaluate patients and perform tests such as pulmonary function tests, determine appropriate therapy and treatment options with physicians, obtain and analyze blood and sputum samples, manage respiratory equipment and devices, educate patients and families about lung diseases and breathing disorders, and participate in advanced life support measures for all age groups. You may also respond to medical emergencies, round with interdisciplinary teams, and provide care plans for each patient during your shift. Shifts are typically 12 hours, covering both days and nights, and you may be assigned to various units including intensive care and step-down units. Recommended qualifications include completion of an accredited respiratory therapy program (associate degree minimum), current licensure as a respiratory therapist, and experience with ventilator management, diagnostic testing, and emergency interventions. Strong communication skills and the ability to educate patients and families are also important.
