Job Description

Under the general direction of a physician and by prescription, the Registered Respiratory Therapist provides respiratory therapy services and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system.

Responsibilities

  • Reads prescription, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment.
  • Determines the most suitable method of administering inhalants and modifications needed to be compatible with physician's orders.
  • Evaluates the appropriateness of medical orders.
  • Interprets clinical data to optimize patient clinical objectives.
  • Sets up and operates mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, and aerosol generators.
  • Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy.
  • Performs bronchopulmonary drainage and assists patients with breathing exercises.
  • Consults with a physician in the event of adverse reactions.
  • Maintains patient charts containing pertinent identification and therapy information.
  • Assists in transporting mechanically ventilated patients and responds to code situations.

Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure

  • Graduate of a CoARC approved Respiratory program.
  • 2 years of experience required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RTT) certification.
  • NRP may be required for certain facilities.
  • State Licensure: Compliance with PA Act 31, 33, 34, 73.
