Responsibilities include diagnostic evaluation, which involves obtaining and analyzing physiological specimens. Interpreting physiologic data and performing tests of the cardiopulmonary system are essential duties. Management, education, rehabilitation, and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system are key responsibilities. The practice includes the application of technology and treatment protocols across care sites. This includes the application and monitoring of medical gases and environmental control systems. Mechanical ventilatory support, artificial airway care, and bronchopulmonary hygiene are important aspects of the role. Pharmacological agents related to respiratory care procedures and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation are part of the duties. Providing hemodynamic cardiovascular support is also a significant responsibility.
