This role involves evaluating and treating patients with complex, multiple problems. The majority of time is spent in critical care areas with protocol ventilator management. Independent decision-making and self-direction are significant parts of the job. The therapist is responsible for delivering patient care while addressing biological, emotional, and psychosocial needs. Patient and family education is a key component of patient care delivery. This role also includes mentoring and precepting new employees, students, and peers. The therapist performs patient assessments and collaborates with healthcare team members to plan and implement patient care. Duties also include verifying orders and administering aerosolized medication, bronchial hygiene, and oxygen therapy. Ventilator management, airway management, and arterial blood gas sampling and analysis are crucial responsibilities. Promoting a safe and quality environment is essential. The therapist must ensure accurate electronic orders, charting, and promote high levels of patient safety. Participation in performance improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice is expected. Additional responsibilities include assisting in invasive and non-invasive procedures and pulmonary diagnostic testing. The Respiratory Therapist II complies with all policies and standards of work.
