The radiation therapist is an integral member of the health care team. They collaborate with the radiation oncologist, radiation oncology nurse, medical dosimetrist, and physicist. The goal is to coordinate services, ensure quality patient care, and provide continuity of care. During the treatment course, the therapist contributes to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's plan of care. The practice of the radiation therapist includes delivering prescribed care, observing patients for reactions, and following radiation safety guidelines. They assist with dosimetry and tumor localization procedures, maintain appropriate records, and perform equipment checks. Patient teaching for the adult and geriatric population is also part of their responsibilities. The radiation therapist functions as the patient advocate throughout the course of therapy.
