Patients may be suffering from injuries, or muscle, nerve, joint, and bone diseases. The goal is to improve or restore function, increase strength, relieve pain, and enhance functional independence. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. Clinical duties include interpretation and implementation of referrals. This includes evaluating patient functional abilities and disabilities, such as range of motion, strength, and coordination. Standardized assessments and testing should be utilized to establish functional baselines, which will be used throughout treatment. There will be interdisciplinary discussions, rounds, and clinics as part of the role. The therapist will establish education and treatment planning for both patients and their families. Patient care goal setting and estimating the length of treatment are also required. Direct patient care involves conducting individual and/or group physical therapy activities according to the treatment plan. The therapist will facilitate and instruct patients in the skills necessary for successful participation. They may design and fabricate splints and other assistive devices as needed. Involvement in program development and participation in department process improvement is expected. The therapist will serve as a resource person in areas of expertise and may provide in-services for the rehabilitation staff. Documentation is required for evaluations, patient treatment plans, treatments performed, and progress. It is important to maintain accurate and complete records for each person served. Communication with leadership regarding any limitations that could affect timely documentation is essential. Therapists should be prepared to cross-train and provide coverage in other departments as necessary.
