The PTA uses their knowledge and skills to help the physical therapist provide selected interventions as described in the patient’s plan of care. The PTA uses their clinical problem-solving skills to ensure patient safety and comfort, as well as completion of interventions selected to achieve the patient’s desired outcomes and goals. PTAs demonstrate effective communication and strong interpersonal skills to motivate patients and provide compassionate care. They adhere to the APTA code of ethics. They appropriately carry out treatment as directed by the supervising physical therapist. They are able to provide a variety of treatment approaches utilizing appropriate manual techniques and available equipment and modalities. They appropriately modify treatment in response to patient progress and keep the PT informed of changes in status and overall progress. They assist other facility staff members as needed to provide care and create a clean, orderly, and effective environment for rehabilitation and physical therapy. They document patient progress according to approved medical documentation and facility documentation procedures to best describe client progress toward established goals. They function independently within the scope of the PTA Practice Act. They maintain and consistently demonstrate competency in all areas of assigned client care needs and seek out additional information, in-service or other educational opportunities to remain competent and current in practice. They provide individualized patient and caregiver education.
