Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Pediatric Oncology/Hematology position at a Level 1 Trauma Academic Medical Center, requiring at least 1 year of pediatric hem/onc experience and APHON chemo certification for PHO placement.

Details

  • Work in a 16-bed Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (PHO) unit or 16-bed Pediatric Adolescent (PA) unit within a large academic medical center
  • Patient population includes leukemia, solid tumors, sickle cell crisis, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, behavioral health overlay, and general adolescent medicine
  • Average daily census of 14–32 patients across both units
  • RN-to-patient ratios: 1:3–4 on Peds Hem/Oncology; 1:4–5 on Peds Adolescent Medicine
  • 12-hour night shifts, 1830–0700, 36 hours per week
  • Every other weekend rotation required
  • Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays
  • Floating required routinely between the PA and PHO units and other units within the pediatric hospital, excluding the Peds ED
  • EMR: Epic (experience required)
  • IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Omnicell
  • Bedside telemetry monitoring available; no telemetry technician on unit

Requirements

  • Active NC RN license or Compact RN license currently in hand
  • BLS required for both PHO and PA placements
  • PALS preferred for both PHO and PA placements
  • APHON chemotherapy certification required for PHO placement
  • Minimum 1 year of pediatric hematology/oncology acute care experience required for PHO placement
  • Minimum 1 year of pediatric acute care experience required for PA placement
  • Most recent experience must be within the last year
  • Proficiency in central line management and chemotherapy administration
  • Strong pediatric assessment and critical thinking skills
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
  • Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN

  • Administer chemotherapy and manage central lines as core responsibilities on the PHO unit
  • Department support includes CNAs, charge nurses, receptionist/HUC, phlebotomy, an IV/VAT team for difficult peripheral access, and a resource nurse (availability varies)
  • Respiratory therapy, hospitalist, and intensivist coverage available 24/7
  • Scrub color: royal blue; pediatric-appropriate scrub tops are permitted
  • Unit culture is team-oriented, supportive, and family-centered with a high emphasis on professional growth, education, and safety
  • Orientation includes new employee orientation (NEO) plus 2 days of departmental orientation
  • A clinical interview with the manager is required as part of the hiring process
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible; local candidates are not accepted
  • Former permanent employees of any AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year before being considered
  • First-time travelers will be considered with a strong pediatric background
  • Free parking available on site
