This role involves assisting in the preparation and performance of human post-mortem examinations. Responsibilities include assisting in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen examinations, which includes gross description and complete dissection of surgical specimens. The candidate will select and submit tissue sections for microscopic examination, including frozen and permanent sections for light, electron, and fluorescent microscopy. The Pathologist's Assistant will be responsible for the accessioning of specimens and assuring proper identification of specimens in accordance with surgical pathology policies. This includes preparing containers and tissue cassettes. The role involves aiding in resident training and credentialing, offering technical and teaching support to residents in accordance with practice guidelines. The Pathologist's Assistant will assess the residents' levels of competency in handling specimens. The position requires gross photography of specimens as needed and maintenance of files. The candidate will be responsible for tumor procurement for biorepository and documentation of quality assurance indicators. The role aids in the quality assurance and quality control plan of the department, focusing on specimen identification and maintenance of instruments. Responsibilities also include inventory management of supplies in the surgical pathology lab. The Pathologist's Assistant will select gross tissue and extremities for disposal after reports have been finalized. Performing autopsies, including external examination, in situ organ inspection, evisceration, dissection, and dictation or recording of all data from gross analytical and microscopic examinations is also required. The candidate will assist in other related duties as directed or as time permits.
