Activities focus on patient care and utilize assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation in accordance with occupational therapy standards and governance policies. The role primarily involves outpatient treatment, with potential floating to acute care as needed. Evaluation of the patient’s function is conducted through formal and informal testing measures covering various systems and functions. A goal-specific treatment regime based on assessment data and patient tolerance is developed. Written treatment regimes are submitted to be included in the plan of treatment authorized by the physician. Plans of care are updated as needed to reflect changes in patient status. The schedule of treatment is devised and discussed with the patient, family, and caregiver. Education is provided to the patient and their support system regarding the patient's condition, alternatives for treatment, prognosis, and rationale for selected interventions. Supervision is provided for Occupational Therapist Assistants and students according to regulatory standards. Recommendations for adaptive/supportive equipment are made, and assistance is provided in securing necessary equipment for patients. Documentation of patient responses to treatment and changes in condition must comply with relevant policies and standards. Daily documentation necessary for compliance is required. Treatment interventions are facilitated to restore optimal functioning specific to the therapist’s area of care. The role includes education for the patient and caregiver in home education programs using effective teaching methods. Effective communication with internal and external customers is essential to maximize patient care quality. Participation in team conferences and interdisciplinary meetings is expected. Promotion of occupational therapy within the community and participation in community education are encouraged. The position functions as the case manager for assigned cases. Commitment to the mission of the organization is expected, as evidenced by customer service and teamwork. Confidentiality of patient information must be maintained according to established policies. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Physical and mental requirements include managing stressful situations and exposure to potentially infectious materials. Movement about the facility, frequent postural changes, and the ability to lift or carry weights as specified are necessary. Overall dexterity including handling and reaching is required, alongside regular schedule adherence. This role emphasizes excellence, integrity, teamwork, and accountability within the workplace.
