Description: The Certified Surgical Technician works collaboratively with the surgical team. This role advocates for patient safety and maintains a sterile field. The technician organizes and prepares all instruments for surgical procedures. They are responsible for maintaining and running the surgical back table. The CST anticipates surgeon needs and ensures instruments are set up ahead of time. They prepare operating rooms and adhere to standards and procedures. Light call schedule is required for emergent cases only, with no trauma call. The technician demonstrates competence in care of specimens. They carry out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments and procedures. They follow aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures. Rooms are cleaned and prepared in a timely manner before and after procedures. The CST follows department procedures for steam sterilization and monitoring. They ensure all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment are available for each surgical procedure. The position involves collaboration with nursing team members to maintain equipment and supplies for surgeries. Equipment and instruments are checked prior to procedures to ensure proper functioning. The technician consults with staff members when unfamiliar with equipment or procedures. Accurate completion of operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles) is required. They follow proper procedure in the event of an incorrect count and report discrepancies. Preparation for procedures occurs at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless directed otherwise. An orderly and sterile instrument table is maintained for efficiency. The technician holds responsibility for the care of instruments and equipment during the intra-operative phase. Compliance with the call schedule follows department and organization procedures. Professional interaction with patients and family members is essential. Patients are provided with explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary. The CST notifies appropriate personnel when a patient complains of pain. Procedures for treatments are adopted to meet individual needs. The technician assists in positioning, prepping, and draping patients for surgical procedures. Basic scrubbing of cases is done with little to no supervision.
