Job Title: OB Technician Profession: Surgical Tech Specialty: Birthing Pavilion Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12 Hour PM-AM Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum Years of Experience: Not specified License: Not specified Certifications: Certified Surgical Technician Must-Have: Knowledge and understanding of Client specific surgical procedures (Cesarean Section, Hysterectomy). Knowledge of episiotomy procedure and role in procedural tasks. Basic understanding of Labor and Delivery unit workflows and supply needs. Description: The OB Technician works collaboratively with the surgical team while advocating for patient safety and maintaining the sterile field. He or she organizes and prepares all instruments for surgical procedures and is responsible for maintaining and running the surgical back table. The technician anticipates surgeon needs, ensures all necessary instruments and supplies are available ahead of time, sets up rooms, and adheres to established standards and procedures. There is a light call schedule for emergent cases only, with no trauma call at a small critical access facility. Functional Duties and Responsibilities: Demonstrates competence in the care of specimens and handles them accurately at all times. Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments and procedures. Follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures. Cleans and prepares rooms promptly before and after procedures. Follows departmental procedures for steam sterilization, including chemical and biological monitoring as appropriate. Collaborates with nursing team members to maintain equipment and supplies for surgical procedures. Checks all equipment and instruments before each procedure to ensure proper functioning. Accurately completes operating room counts of instruments, sponges, and needles. Reports any discrepancies to the appropriate personnel immediately. Sets up, scrubs, and prepares for procedures at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time unless directed otherwise. Maintains an orderly and sterile instrument table for efficiency. Cares for instruments and equipment during the intra-operative phase. Patient Care: Interacts professionally with patients and families, providing explanations and reassurance as necessary. Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when a patient complains of pain. Adopts treatment procedures to meet individual patient needs. Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping patients for surgical procedures. Able to scrub basic cases with minimal supervision.
