Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Cardiac Telemetry Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS Must-Have: Must be able to read strips. Comfortable with cardiac patients. Ability to titrate Heparin. Experience with post-surgical cardiac patients. Description: The unit has 43 beds, with 9-10 being private rooms. Average nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5, with the ability to flex up to 1:6. Common diagnoses include post heart catheterizations, CHF, COPD, and arrhythmias. Nurses are expected to manage medications including titrating Heparin and occasionally Lasix or Bumex. Cardizem and Amiodarone are not titrated. There are monitor technicians available, but nurses must be able to read telemetry strips. The charge nurse is present 24/7 and may take a patient assignment based on unit needs. Patient Care Technicians are present, with a ratio goal of 1:8 and flexibility up to 1:12-18 based on unit conditions. Duties of Patient Care Technicians include assisting with activities of daily living, vital signs, and EKGs. Nurses must be able to perform EKGs as needed. Equipment use includes CPAP and BiPAP for supportive therapy. Shifts are self-scheduled, with weekends required every other week. Holiday shifts may be required based on unit needs. Travelers are expected to rotate as floats if necessary. Royal blue scrubs are the required uniform. Teamwork is essential, with a fast-paced environment involving numerous admissions and discharges daily. Nurses are encouraged to ask for help if feeling overwhelmed.
