Description:
The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) typically has a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2, which may also include 1:1 or 1:3 ratios.
The unit treats post-surgical patients, open abdomens, multi-system trauma, and endovascular cases.
Registered Nurses (RNs) are required to titrate drips, including pressors, sedation, paralytics, and insulin.
There is a Charge Nurse and a House Supervisor on each shift, and they may take an assignment as staffing allows.
Nurse aides or patient care techs are available, with a typical ratio of 1:10.
Intensivists are present in-house 24/7, with telemedicine support available during after-hours.
Respiratory Therapy (RT) is provided around the clock in the ICU.
Monitor Techs are available, and RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry strips.
Shifts run from 7 AM to 7:30 PM, with weekend and holiday requirements included in the schedule.
Travelers may float to lower levels of care, managing a full team of patients in those environments.
There is no specific dress code; however, unit/department specific orientation is provided.
