RN - First Assist (RNFA) - Congenital Cardiac

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the surgical first assist to the operating surgeon during congenital cardiac procedures, performing tasks such as tissue handling, wound closure, and hemostasis
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and ensure the operating room environment is optimized for efficiency and patient safety
  • Collaborate in preoperative assessment and preparation of patients undergoing congenital cardiac surgery
  • Support postoperative care including wound management, recovery monitoring, and patient education
  • Partner with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and OR staff to maintain seamless surgical workflows
  • Mentor and educate nursing staff on congenital cardiac procedures and first-assist techniques
Required Qualifications
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Maine
  • Completion of an accredited RNFA program
  • Minimum of 5 years of operating room experience, including at least 1–2 years in cardiac surgery
  • Active BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications
  • Proficiency in first-assist techniques and sterile field management
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills in high-pressure surgical environments
Preferred Experience / Skills
  • CNOR certification
  • Demonstrated expertise in congenital cardiac surgery
  • Experience working with both pediatric and adult patients with congenital heart defects
