Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Pediatric Psychiatric Duration: 10 Weeks Shift: 7 AM - 7 PM Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing required License: State License required Certifications: BLS, MOAB (obtained on-site as part of orientation) Must-Have: De-escalation experience, experience with physical restraints, comfortability to run groups, documentation skills Description: Start date is needed in August. Interviews will be simplified and subject to manager approval. Candidates must be willing to float between pediatric and adult units as needed. Facility beds include 50 pediatric and 44 adult units. All patients come from an emergency department and are medically cleared. Involuntary and voluntary admissions are accepted. Patients in the pediatric unit are typically aged 5 to 18 years. Common pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria. Adult patients are typically aged 18 and older, including geriatric patients. Common adult diagnoses include schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and anxiety. The facility does not accept forensic patients or inmates. Seclusion rooms are available for use when necessary. Occasionally, substance use disorder or detoxing patients may be seen, but they must be medically cleared. Care includes both traditional medical and psychiatric treatment, along with specialized therapies such as pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens. Patient ratios include 1 RN for every 5-6 patients during the day and 1 for 13 at night with resource support. Psych Techs support the unit, typically 6 during the day for pediatrics and 2 for adults. Required skills include de-escalation techniques and the ability to conduct medication passes. Travelers may have the opportunity to take on charge responsibilities, though it is not mandatory. Support on the unit includes nurse supervisors available evenings and weekends. The manager encourages open communication regarding any issues. A charge nurse may have patient assignments. There are contracted phlebotomists on site for lab draws. A nurse practitioner is available until 4 PM on site and is on call overnight. Psychiatrists conduct daily rounds and are on call from midnight to 6 AM. Occupational therapy services are available 7 days a week. Security is on site but does not respond to patient escalations; staff respond to these situations. The charting system used is Cerner, and Pyxis is utilized for medication management. Travelers are expected to float between all units as necessary. The first week of the schedule will involve working during the day, followed by 12-hour shifts as scheduled. Weekend rotations occur every other weekend, and block scheduling cannot be guaranteed. Travelers are expected to work holidays in rotation and may request up to 7 days off with approval. Scheduling is modified self-scheduling, allowing travelers to sign up for preferred shifts, which will be reviewed for coverage. If shifts are not signed up for, travelers will be automatically assigned vacant shifts. Travelers should wear solid color scrubs that are professional in appearance. Winter conditions may lead to heavy snowfall, which should be conveyed during interviews. In the event of an escalation, roles will be assigned to staff while a code leader applies verbal de-escalation techniques. A debriefing form will be completed afterward. Management will assist during code situations, and MOAB will be reviewed on-site. Travelers are encouraged to request additional practice with de-escalation if needed. Scenario-based training is provided every other week for practice opportunities.
