Job Title: Registered Nurse - Psychiatric Unit Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Psychiatric Nursing Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, CPI (preferred) Must-Have: Acute/inpatient or state hospital experience Good de-escalation and strong communication skills Preferred adolescent experience Description: This unit has 25 licensed beds, including adult and adolescent beds. The current nurse-to-patient ratio is 3:1 for adults and 6:1 for adolescents. Common patient populations include adolescents and adults dealing with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, psychosis, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Experience with IVs is very rare on this unit, and travelers are not required to have this experience. A charge nurse or house supervisor may not always be present on each shift. Mechanical restraints and seclusion are used rarely. Mental health techs or aids are available on the unit, typically with a ratio of 2:9 patients. Occupational therapy and social work services are available on weekdays. Respiratory therapy is in-house and provides necessary treatments. There are no tele/monitor techs on this unit, and RNs are not required to read their own strips. Shifts are self-scheduled based on seniority, accommodating block scheduling if possible. Every other weekend and holiday work is required. There is no call or standby requirement. Staff may float throughout the hospital as needed. The dress code is business casual with restrictions on maroon colors. Only the child/adolescent inpatient unit in the region is located on the fourth floor. Safety features include emergency buttons for code blue, hospital security, and additional staff support. Nurses are expected to engage actively in patient care and participate in 15-minute rounds. Patience and a calm demeanor are essential traits for success in this unit. Candidates must be within a 50-mile radius of the facility. Requests for time off must be submitted upfront and are limited to seven days or less per 13-week contract. Additional requests for time off will not be approved. The charting system used is EPIC. A BSN is not required for this position. The care setting is acute in nature. This role involves providing comprehensive nursing care to patients within the psychiatric unit.
