Observes, assesses, and records symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients. Makes nursing rounds and takes and records vitals. Prepares and administers prescribed medications and ordered treatment plans. Monitors restrained patients on a timely basis and provides immediate medical attention in emergencies. If assigned, schedules, assigns, and reviews work of lower-level staff, including authority to approve or disapprove leave requests and complete performance evaluations, though such duties are not mandatory. Participates in staff development and education, reviews care plans written by staff, and trains and orients new employees. In a corrections medical center, responsible for all health care for bedridden inmates, evaluates care needed and rendered, and develops care plans. Teaches health care principles, administers medication including narcotics, and renders all direct nursing care as needed. Performs specialized procedures including IV therapy, chemotherapy, wound care, oxygen therapy, dialysis, blood transfusion, intubation, CPR, tube feeding, catheterization, suctioning, and phlebotomy duties. Organizes and oversees the code blue team, directs health care staff assigned to the area, and acts as lead worker in charge of one assigned shift in the absence of senior staff. Assists physicians in giving diagnostic health evaluations. Performs clerical tasks including documentation of medications, treatments, and pertinent medical information. Completes required reports such as incident and accident reports, and documents information as necessary. Orders supplies and equipment, maintains inventory of controlled drugs and equipment, and arranges for out-patient clinic appointments. Serves as liaison within the organization, conducts and/or attends meetings, and serves as an instructor or member of problem-solving teams or groups when needed.
