Description: This is a stepdown unit with 28 private beds. The nurse to patient ratio is 1:4-5, with a maximum of 1:6 for MedSurg acuity. The electronic medical record system in use is Cerner and EPIC. There is a charge nurse during the day with no assigned patients, and the night charge nurse may have an assignment. Two nurse aides are available per shift during the day and mid-shift, with no CNAs present at night after 11 PM. Weekend requirements include working every other weekend, days every other S/S, and nights F/S/S. Every other holiday will be required, fitting into the permanent staff holiday rotation. Scrub color is navy blue, and jackets, if worn, must also be navy blue. Nurses will have access to tele monitors and are required to read and interpret strips despite the presence of a monitor tech. Nurses must be able to titrate drips including Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Heparin, with insulin administered only as a set-rate. BIPAP, CPAP, and high flow oxygen are utilized in the unit. A hospitalist is in-house 24/7 while an intensivist covers the ICU seven days a week from 7 AM to 7 PM and is available on-call after hours. An NP may sometimes assist as well. There is no IV team, but charge nurses or the ICU Director can be called for difficult IV sticks. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7. Pharmacy services are also available around the clock. Nurses will work in 12-hour shifts from 7 AM to 7:30 PM and 7 PM to 7:30 AM. Nurse aids will work 8-hour shifts from 6:30 AM to 3 PM and from 2:30 PM to 11 PM. The director is supportive and communicates regularly with the staff regarding their schedules. There is flexibility for block scheduling, making it easy to work with the team. Nurses may be required to float to the ICU as helping hands. Orientation for the floor will require two shifts with a preceptor. Common diagnoses include heavy cardiac cases, dysrhythmias, and CVAs along with a mix of other diagnoses, including those downgraded from the ICU. The cancellation policy allows for two shift cancellations per 13-week assignment. Charting is performed using EPIC. A BSN is not required for this position.
