Artificial nails are prohibited in all departments providing patient care. Refusal to remove artificial nails will lead to termination of contract. Nurses must pass a skills exam during orientation. Orientation includes open book exam on skills learned. Candidates are provided all necessary resources to pass the exam. A minimum score of 90% is required to pass, or candidates will be terminated. The unit has 18 beds with nurse to patient ratios of 1:4, and 1:3 for post-surgical patients in the first 24 hours. Common diagnoses include cardiac and vascular-related issues. Unit supports patients requiring intermediate care and downgraded levels from CVICU. Common medications for titration include amiodarone, nitroglycerin, nicardipine, epinephrine, and diltiazem. Charge nurse is present on each shift but rarely takes an assignment. Patient care techs are available with a ratio of 1:18. Hospitalist and intensivist are in-house 24/7, with cardiology on call after hours. Respiratory therapists are in-house 24/7. Nurses must read and interpret telemetry strips, as remote techs are available. Shifts are scheduled from 0630 to 1900 and 1830 to 0700. The manager schedules the shifts with no block or self-scheduling option. Every other weekend is required. Nurses may float to same level and lower levels of acuity. Scrub color is navy blue. Tailored orientation may include 1-2 shifts on the unit. Time-off requests must be submitted upfront, with a limit of 7 days. Additional requests will not be approved after submissions. The hospital can cancel up to 4 shifts during the 13-week assignment. Charting is conducted using an electronic medical record system. A BSN is not required for this position. This is an acute care setting with a trauma level of 1.
