Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Intermediate Care Unit Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 2 Years License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips Description: Unit has a capacity of 30 beds. The goal for patient ratios is 1:4, but it usually runs 1:5, with occasional ratios of 1:6. Charge nurses take a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts. Charge nurses also have Clinical Assistants working alongside them. There are usually 2-3 nursing assistants on the unit. Weekend shifts are required, with set shifts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Staff must work a minimum of 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule. Holiday flexibility is required, but many shifts are typically covered by permanent staff. Scrub color is navy blue for tops and bottoms, including navy scrub jackets. Nurses are able to read and interpret telemetry strips, although there are telemetry technicians available. Registered nurses must be competent in titrating various IV drips, including Amiodarone, Cardizem, and others. Respiratory therapy equipment is managed by a dedicated team available 24/7. Hospitalist coverage is in-house around the clock. An IV team and pharmacy are also available 24/7 to assist nursing staff. Nursing shifts run from 7 AM to 7 PM or 7 PM to 7 AM, and staff are expected to be on the unit ready to work 15 minutes prior to their shift. Self-scheduling is permitted as long as the needs of the unit are met. All nursing staff are required to float as needed. Common patient diagnoses include chest pain, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, and patients requiring intermediate care. Attendance policies are strict, with zero tolerance for tardies and call-offs beyond specified limits. Charting is done through an electronic system. A BSN is not required for this position.
