The patient population consists of adults and geriatrics with intermediate levels of care, specifically requiring monitoring interventions no more frequently than once per hour. Common diagnoses include dysrhythmias, congestive heart failure, acute onset stroke or stroke symptoms not requiring TPA, acute coronary syndrome, and myocardial ischemia. The work environment is fast-paced with a strong focus on patient throughput while providing patient-centered care. The unit emphasizes teamwork and collaboration among the staff. All patients are on hardwire telemetry and self-monitored by the registered nurse. The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:4. Floating may be required within the facility and scope of practice as needed. Staffing and scheduling are self-managed. Weekend shifts are required every other weekend, unless otherwise specified. The nursing staff provides a wide range of care, including blood product administration, central line care and management, interpretation of dysrhythmias, and management of cardiac drips without titration. Additional interdisciplinary support includes IV teams, physical therapy, respiratory services, interpretation services, radiology, social services, rapid response teams, pharmacy, and transportation.
