Job Title: RN - PCU Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Progressive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Night Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum of 18 months of PCU experience License: RN License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Description: Registered Nurse for the Progressive Care Unit. The facility has a chest pain center and a stroke center. It does not have a trauma designation or serve as a teaching hospital. The unit consists of 36 beds. The average census is 36 patients. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3-4, with a CNA-to-patient ratio of 1:9. Common patient types and diagnoses include COPD, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, renal failure, sepsis, and those requiring tracheostomies or mechanical ventilation. Additional patient care includes management of continuous BIPAP/CPAP and high flow nasal cannula, hypothermia regulation, and titratable IV drips. Required skills include experience with patients on ventilation, temporary or transvenous pacemakers, chest tubes, trach care, blood products, and wound care. Support within the department includes CNAs for patient care, a 24/7 IV/VAT team, and a dedicated pharmacist. Clinical specialists and a nurse educator are available for additional support. The use of electronic medical records and monitoring systems is integrated into patient care. Nurses may be required to float to other facilities within the region based on organizational needs. Unit culture emphasizes family orientation and teamwork.
