The unit features 28 beds, with an average census of 26 patients. Patients typically present with conditions such as acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, NSTEMI/STEMI, chest pain ruled out, and post-cardiac procedures. The nurse-patient ratio is 1:4-5, with the support of a certified nursing assistant. The nursing assistant assists with obtaining vital signs, blood glucose checks, and conducting hourly safety rounds. A receptionist and charge nurse support unit operations but may or may not carry patient assignments. Phlebotomy services are available for peripheral blood draws. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7 by paging for assistance when needed. Hospitalists and intensivists are also on-site 24/7. Nurses are responsible for telemetry monitoring and verification of strips once a shift. Technology used in this unit includes an electronic medical record system, IV pumps, and medication dispensing systems. Floating assignments may occur within the cardiology division or to any medical-surgical unit as needed. The unit culture promotes a family atmosphere and emphasizes teamwork as the top priority.
