Job Title: RN - PCU Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Progressive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years of ICU or PCU experience, CVICU preferred License: Active RN license Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: - General nursing skills - General ICU skills - Experience with cardiac patients - Swanz and Impella experience required - Wound care and dressing changes skills - Defibrillation and EKG interpretation - Post-arrest management - Cardioversions - Management and pulling of sheaths - Bipap/cpap/hi-flow knowledge - Chest tube management - Trach care - Arterial line management - All drips (pressors, cardiac, sedation, etc.) Description: New unit is opening in early 2026. It will initially open as a high acuity PCU and transition to an ICU by the end of 2026. The unit will have 10-12 beds. Patient types will include heavy cardiac cases such as CHF, cardiomyopathy, tamponade, shock, STEMI/NSTEMI, post-cath, dysrhythmias, and arrhythmias. Experience with post-pacemaker/ablations, external/temporary pacers, post-CABG/open hearts, and heart transplants is expected. Post-vascular surgeries will also be included. Patient ratios will initially be 1:3-4. Once transitioned to ICU, the ratio will change to 1:2-3. Even with patients requiring Impella, the ratio could remain 1:3 as they are typically stable while waiting for transplants. Travelers will be expected to care for fresh open heart patients once the unit transitions to ICU. Highly preferred experience includes LVAD and post-cardiac transplant patients, but training can be provided. No ECMO experience is required. IABPs will be accepted once the unit transitions to ICU. Support within the department includes 1 CNA. There will initially be no unit secretary, but one will be hired once the unit transitions to ICU. The charge nurse will not take patients. Management support includes a manager in the morning and an ANM until midnight. Other support staff includes phlebotomy, a PICC team, and 24/7 respiratory therapy. Hospitalists and intensivists will be available 24/7. Remote tele techs will contact the RN directly for any issues. Monitors will be placed in every room. The electronic medical record system in use is EPIC. IV pumps used will be Alaris. Medication dispensing will utilize Omnicell. Floating to other units within the scope of practice may be required. Potential floating units include various specified units in the facility. Travelers will be put into rotation with other staff.
