Care is provided according to the philosophy and goals of the Department of Nursing. The RN utilizes caring principles, relationship-based care, and a professional nursing practice model. The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care for all patients assigned. The RN determines the progress of the patient toward goals. The RN utilizes a therapeutic professional relationship with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team. Care promotes, maintains, and restores health according to the specific needs of each patient. The RN supports the mission, vision, values, and standards of excellence of the organization. Competency is demonstrated through the ability to apply scientific knowledge from social, biological, and physical sciences. The nursing process includes ongoing assessment of the patient's physical and psychosocial condition. The RN formulates a nursing diagnosis through observation of the client's condition and behavior, and through information obtained. The RN collaborates with the client to develop a care plan that ensures safety, comfort, hygiene, and protection. The plan also includes disease prevention and restorative measures. The RN performs necessary nursing skills and explains health treatments to the client and family. Teaching is provided to clients and families to support health needs. The RN evaluates the effectiveness of the care plan through observation of the client's condition. Communication with the client and health team members is essential for plan modification as needed. The RN demonstrates a current working knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, and medications. Tasks are delegated to care team members based on their scope of practice and capability. The RN supervises nursing care provided by the care team. Advocacy for the client is demonstrated by initiating actions to improve health care when needed. The RN gives the client opportunities to make informed decisions about their health care. Culturally competent, age-appropriate, ethical care is provided within legal standards. The RN coordinates patient care activities with nurses, physicians, allied health professionals, and ancillary team members. Effective communication skills are utilized to facilitate safe patient handoffs. Nursing care is documented according to policies. Manual and automated information systems are used to improve efficiency and productivity. The RN is accountable for meeting or exceeding unit and organizational goals. Positive patient care experiences are facilitated through individual interactions with patients and families. Personal behaviors impacting patient experience are understood. The RN assists in the resolution of complaints to achieve immediate resolution if possible. Investigations of complaints from physicians, employees, and patients are conducted. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
