Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Surgical Acute - Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: 1 year License: Active Illinois license or confirmation of application process Certifications: BLS Must-Have: Post-op care of patients, critical thinking skills, good bedside manner, team player Description: The unit consists of 63 beds, including private and observation beds. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 4-5 RNs during the day and 5-6 RNs at night. The common patient diagnoses include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, overflow medical, dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, and TPN. RNs are not required to titrate drips, with the only titratable drip being Heparin. There is a charge nurse available on each shift, who does not take an assignment. A house supervisor is present 24/7. Patient care technicians are available with different ratios: 7-10 patients on days and 10-15 patients on nights. Patient care technicians assist with vital signs, accu checks, activities of daily living, turning, and ambulation. Respiratory therapy equipment, such as CPAP and high flow, is managed by the respiratory team. Registered Nurses manage inhalers and can place patients on CPAP but do not handle ventilators. Telemetry monitoring is present, and monitor techs are responsible for reading strips; bedside RNs do not read their own strips. Shifts are from 0700-1930 for days and 1930-0730 for nights. Travelers do not self-schedule and will be the first to float to other units, floating only to units with the same level of experience. A weekend shift requirement is applicable, with every other weekend scheduled on Saturday and Sunday. Holiday rotations occur every other holiday. The dress code allows for any color scrubs. Unit-specific orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor and one 12-hour shift for EPIC and professional orientation.
